Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) was created in 1997 to serve as the leading national third-party certifier for women business enterprises. WBENC, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization, developed nationally recognized women’s business enterprise certification standards. WBENC is an organization of corporate members.
WBENC certifies more than 12,000 WBEs nationally and provides business training, networking and matchmaking services. Major corporations have developed supplier diversity programs as a strategy to identify and engage qualified diverse suppliers for their supply base. Historically, corporations developed these programs to meet the requirements of one of their customers, the federal government. The federal government requires companies that they do business with to procure 5% of their goods and services from women and 5% from minorities.
