Be Trendy in Your Packaging for 2020

Every industry has key trends or even megatrends. Trends are a major movement, pattern, or emerging force that will have a significant impact on consumers, and the trends for packaging products are no different. As an all-encompassing industry term, packaging is a designed solution for the technology and work going into protecting or enclosing every sort of product destined for storage, shipping, and sales.

Statistics from well-recognized organizations indicate the packaging industry’s market value will reach $1 trillion by 2020. Here are a few packaging and design trends that you should look at for redesigning your product packaging in 2020.

Packaging Solution Trends

Be Flexible – Helping to extend shelf life, flexible packaging has taken off over the last 10 years, doubling in size to $228 billion in 2019. Global urbanization has increased the demand for such solutions to meet e-commerce and technological advancements. Flexible packaging is replacing more traditional solutions due to improved cost economics and lower pack weights. Flexible solutions also include stand-up pouches that usually have a resealable zipper and clear windows for product view, all while being recyclable. According to a study by the Freedonia Group, demand for stand up pouches in the U.S. will grow at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of almost 6% to $2.9 billion by 2022.

Be Recyclable – Great packages start with using the correct material – one that can deliver on all marks including performance, quality, and security for the products it carries. Paperboard packaging promotes sustainability through the use of pre-recycled packaging that can be recycled again. According to the Paperboard Packaging Council, paperboard cartons are where “tomorrow’s packaging begins,” while making eye-popping package designs that can stand out.

Be Vintage – Trends in vintage fashion tend to keep coming back, and the product packaging industry isn’t any different.  “What’s old is new again” rings true in vintage packaging designs. According to 99 Designs, a leading marketing force, throwback designs give consumers a piece of their past. The trends in vintage packaging are popular because old designs are timeless and they tell a story of tradition and passion. Humans are hardwired to refer to the impact on their past and people listen to a nostalgic story. Take your product and tell a story with your packaging, as well-designed packaging makes a big impact on your brand identity. Taking a more comprehensive approach to throwback packaging design will communicate your key messaging and build a deeper connection, striking a chord with your key consumer rage.

Be Minimal – The old adage “less is more” is true in many cases, but especially around packaging in 2020. Minimalist packaging works well because it is just that: simple. Designing packaging that is minimal around products is popular for trendy consumers who tend to reject the idea that products must have excessive wrapping and protection.

Be Monochrome – The duotone craze that graphic designers were enthusiastic over in 2017 has turned that trend into a more simplified version. Monochrome photo filters are widely used in social media images and graphics with millennials so, naturally, the future of monochrome is coming to packaging. Apple has used this in the past with MacBooks, and so has Jack Daniel’s labels on their products. Consumers want transparency and clean labels, while governmental regulations gravitate towards it to avoid counterfeit and faulty products, so brands should want it too. Industrial packaging with food products needs to show recognizable ingredients for customers and lean toward clean labeling and packaging to simplify product design.
