Sustainable Materials for Food Packaging

Food PackagingFood packaging products serve multiple purposes, from marketing and branding to food protection and extended shelf life. With all of these functions in mind, sustainable materials can often be put on the back burner when designing food packages. However as environmental awareness increases, so does the need for sustainable packaging materials that not only contribute to a safer future, but also help reduce costs.

Here are a few types of recycled food packaging products.

  • Corrugated Cardboard: This material is actually the most recycled on the planet. Using corrugated cardboard in place of excessive plastic materials not only improves packaging’s sustainability, but it can also increase graphic space for logos and more detailed product information.

  • Recycled PET: Many food products are wrapped in plastic for protection, quality and appearance. Recycled PET (RPET) is made from recycled soda bottles and water bottles, reducing the need to produce more plastics that can be harmful to the environment.

  • Compostable Materials: In addition to recycled materials, compostable materials can also have a positive impact on the environment. Food packages that are compostable can help simplify the disposal process, allowing consumers to simply throw the package in their compost pile after use for safe removal.
